Look at me now!?
The region emcompassing the river Ruhr, located in the middle of Germany, is the most populous area of the country. It is historically a region dominated and defined by coal mining, the steel industry and an indigenous blue collar local color.
But, today this image has changed and the dense multi-cutural
society has become the cultural heartland of the nation.
In our video trilogy "Look at me now!?"
we are searching for the characteristic sites
and sounds of the Ruhr region, past and present:

Schau mich jetzt an!?
Das Ruhrgebiet, in der Mitte Deutschlands gelegen, ist die
am dichtesten besiedelte Region unseres Landes.
Lange Zeit war es der Kohlebergbau und die Stahlindustrie,
die die Region geprägt haben; mittlerweile hat sich das Profil
gewandelt, und die multikulturell geprägte Bevölkerungsdichte
hat dazu geführt, daß heute im Ruhrgebiet das kulturelle Herz Deutschlands
schlägt.
In unserem dreiteiligen Videowerk "Look at me now!?“
versuchen wir, uns dem Ruhrgebiet bildlich und klanglich zu nähern.

Part 1 - Coal Pot color/gray shows images of the
Ruhr region, its urbanisation as well as its natural landscape, seen from the perspective of a traveler passing through by train. The sky is a dominating aspect, maybe alluding to the past: the gray skies surrounding the smoke stakes of the steel mills. The soundtrack offers on the one hand optimistic melodic, mechanistic organ ostinatos and on the other, the distorted original sounds of the video recording. The juxtaposition of the two provide an atmosphere in which the images unfold and evolve.

Teil 1 - Kohlenpott color/grau
zeigt das Land und die Landschaft, wie sie sich dem aus dem Fenster blickenden Zugreisenden präsentieren, aber auch den Himmel, in dem der Betrachter den Geist
des alten Gebietes vermuten mag. Der Soundtrack liefert mit einerseits
motorisch-munteren Orgelklängen, andererseits verzerrten Originaltönen die Stimmungsgrundlage, auf deren Basis die Bilder ihren Charakter entfalten können.

Part 2 - Phoenix is about the past.
The cumbersome, droning machine sounds of the past,
are transformed into complex, fleet-footed dance rhythms,
defying the fierce noise of the storm winds.
The abandoned building, stripped of its purpose, takes on a new character.
We contemplate its daunting beauty and the position it assumes within the flourishing greenery, nature's attempt at reclaiming the deserted industrial terrain.

Teil 2 - Phoenix
erzählt von damals . Die einst so schwerfälligen, dröhnenden Maschinenklänge werden zu komplexen,
leichtfüssigen Tanzrhythmen, die den heftigen Sturmgeräuschen Paroli bieten. Das stillgelegte Gebäude ,
eine ehemalige Stahlkocherei, ist seines Daseinszwecks beraubt und erhält
so einen neuen Charakter; wir nehmen seine mächtige Schönheit und
den Platz, den es innerhalb des neu enstehenden Pflanzenwildwuchses
einnimmt, wahr.

Part 3 - Beyond Dortmund is in a certain sense, the antithesis of "Phoenix". Here we show a metaphysical side of the city of Dortmund. Through the use of processed electromagnetic sound taken from our field recordings and manipulated images of satellite dishes, we demonstrate the connection between the earth and outer space. In the same manner that "Phoenix" presents the historical past of Dortmund and the surrounding region, "Beyond Dortmund" portrays aspects of the area that transcend the present and the past. The future? Or something that exists beyond reality? |
Part 3 - Jenseits von Dortmund
ist in gewisser Weise die Antithese zu "Phoenix".
Hier zeigen wir die metaphysische Seite der Stadt Dortmund,
indem wir die Klänge von elektromagnetischen Feldaufnahmen bearbeiten,
und verfremdete Bilder von Satellitenschüsseln, die die Verbindung der Erde
mit dem Weltraum herstellen können, benutzen.
Zeigt "Phoenix" Aspekte der Vergangenheit von Dortmund und dem gesamten
Ruhrgebiet, so ist "Jenseits von Dortmund" dem gewidmet, was über
Vergangenheit und Gegernwart hinausgeht. Die Zukunft? Oder das, was jenseits
der Wirklichkeit liegt?
